Russell arrived sans date, but had plenty of security, along with plenty of smiles for the cameras. During the show, he introduced a clip of Gladiator, which was up for the night's top award, best ensemble acting. When his name was called as best actor nominee, he jokingly gave a big, broad -- fake -- smile, apparently for all the critics who teased his glum demeanor at last year's show.

Unfortunately, Russell came up empty-handed this year, too. Benicio Del Toro, won for the film "Traffic." That movie also beat out the Gladiator cast for the best ensemble award. Best supporting actor nominee Joaquin Phoenix also lost, to Albert Finney of "Erin Brockovich."
