Scott Adds Footnote

Variety, December 4 - 10, 2000
HOLLYWOOD DreamWorks launched the DVD release of Gladiator with a screening of the epic November 30, followed by a lifely discussion with director Ridley Scott and star Russell Crowe moderated by Variety chief film critic Todd McCarthy.
The audience was treated to a rare glimpse into modern epic filmmaking, with four CGI-heavy clips from the movie reshown and such techniques as digital "tiling" explained by Scott.
"Every conversation I have with Ridley has a visual component," Crowe said, clarifying how he managed to perform scenes where many of the extras were added in during post-production. "But nothing prepared me for the grandeur of the fist screening."
Speaking about filming his bout with tigers, Crowe humorously recalled a few tense moments and lamented, "Tigers don't take direction that well!"
Talent on hand included co-star Connie Nielsen; scribe David Franzoni; producers Doug Wick, Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes; editor Pietro Scalia; d.p. John Mathieson and composer Hans Zimmer.
