The following is from "Bucky".

On filming at Columbia University:

"There is this amazing beautiful oak library that looks like it came right out of the 40's. Apparently, it was all plastic. The whole thing, every book shelf, every lamp, every painting, etc . . . A rumor floating around was that Russell wanted to buy the bookshelves, until he discovered the truth. There were a few scenes shot at the university. In one, the students are in the student lounge, John Nash walks in and drops an improved version of Go on the table that the others call Nash.

Another has him doing equations on the windows of the school library."

On filming in Queens:
A bar scene was filmed at an Elks lodge, "where apparently there is a really cool bar in the basement."

In the script there is a scene in a bar where Nash's fellow mathematicians are eyeing a beautiful blonde woman, who is there with a group of brunette girlfriends. "They argue the mathematics about hooking up with her. Nash convinces the others to go after the other brunette girls and he walks right up to her, and then straight past her out of the bar."

"Apparently everything went smoothly and during the week, Russell bought chess boards for the four supporting guys. Rapp, Goldberg, etc... They had been playing while at Princeton, and apparently Russell wanted to keep it going. So the other guys all have really nice chess boards now."

"Apparently, they are done filming the 40's."

The following is from Eve:

On filming in the Bronx, at Bronx Community College:
Yesterday was the most exciting day in the Bronx since last October when The Mets and Yankees met at Yankee Stadium for the Subway Series!

Russell and the cast and crew of A Beautiful Mind were filming on the campus of Bronx Community College. The campus was supposed to be that of MIT When I looked up at one of the classic buildings to see the name of the hall, I noticed that something had been put on the facade to make it flawlessly blend in and read "Massachusetts Institute of Technology." There were no students there because it's Easter break, so it was very quiet -- just crew and campus security. There were a couple of students and neighborhood people passing through now and again that would watch for a few moments and then move on. Russell was very focused during the takes but he seemed relaxed and would smile and talk to the cast and crew between filming scenes. He was doing some takes with a little girl, and between takes he would talk with her and then slap her five. When the scene was complete, Ron Howard yelled "That's great!" and patted both of then on the back.

There were several beautiful vintage cars on the set. One of the crew members had a beautiful Harley parked in one corner of the quad, and between scenes Russell walked over there, got on the bike, and did a couple of laps around the quad. . . . At around 3:45, there were about fifteen students and college staff members sitting on the steps of the student union, opposite the shoot. Russell came to the edge of the grass where there was a table, and security came over and motioned for us to go for autographs. . . . He was really sweet to all of the fans, smiled, and asked everyone their name before signing.

Yesterday, he was wearing a darkish suit with a regular tie, his hair was sort of tousled and he had stubble -- not really like the look we saw at Princeton. [The MIT scenes take place a little later in the story.] He was working hard, but seemed relaxed and happy.

Besides being a thrill for me as a Crowe fan, to have a major motion picture with talent of the caliber of Ron Howard and Russell Crowe come to the Bronx, (perhaps the most maligned borough in New York) and act so gracious to "us natives" was something I will never forget!

On filming in Jersey City, NJ:

The following is from Danielle:

"I must say that Russell Crowe is a true gentlemen, for I've met him four times in the past two days. He was very calm and low-key. Since we met a few times . . . he said to me today, 'You're still here?' And I responded, 'I do live in the neighborhood.'"

"I live right across the street from where they are filming and it has been wonderful to observe a movie in the making. Although the majority of the scenes are being filmed in a brownstone . . . he either waves from the street or for a few minutes, signs autographs. Russell has been cool, calm and collected -- and it has been great experience! No one has pestered him, which is nice, for he has been really responsive to his fans."

"The setting in Jersey City is supposed to resemble Massachusetts. When I have seen him, his costume consists of a short black coat, button down shirt, pair of khakis, and a set of eyes to die for! It is going to be a great film." (April 18, 2001)

The following is from Mark:

"They were filming on the corner of Grand Street and Washington Avenue in a small home there. [Next to St. Peter's Prep]. There were also many cars from the 40's parked all over the place." (April 17, 2001)
